Anh Duong’s Lesbienne Madrid is the second in Artspace’s series of 2012 commissions with leading contemporary artists. A six-color lithograph on fine art rag paper, this beautiful rendering of a woman’s foot adorned with deep red nail polish and wearing a delicate sandal may evoke memories of celebrations past or the anticipation of fun to come. On a deeper level, by isolating the image against an empty background, Duong opens a dialectic on the meaning and definition of beauty. In the end, the work is a wonderfully intimate example of the artist’s painterly still lifes.
